A Date with Discount

Hey Young Lovers, so how can I, the self-proclaimed “beauty on a budget” pass up an opportunity to participate in fine dining at a discounted price?  When I think of B. Smith’s I think of upscale, mid-town, the letter B, woman co-owner, black woman, successful entrepreneur, actress and radio host.  Also, being one who is unable to resist any place that basically serves gourmet fried chicken and watermelon.  (Nothing cliché about it I swear)  I chose to attend.

(uh huh "Watermelon Gazpacho" "Chicken Fried Steak" I see you B. Smith)

So NYC Restaurant Week was initially July 22nd to August 2nd.  However with it was extended until August 16th.  Not and un-expected move as they have done this before.  Therefore, making it not a week at all right?  Restaurant Week, in a nutshell it’s a way for restaurants to promote themselves and their menus to tourists and city natives.  It’s also geared toward those who may have never attended prior because they were watching their budgets….eh hem...like myself.  The restaurant offers a Pre-fixed menu for lunch and dinner.

This is actually my first time going to a restaurant during NYC Restaurant Week.  The reason being that with foursquare (insert link) and yelp.com (insert link), I tend to find good deals on places any time of the year.  But since I’ve basically been bombarded with school and work, I wanted to reclaim my summer and well…try something new.

I opted for the Sunday lunch.  Not every restaurant has this option.  I did it for 3 reasons

1- I eat a home cooked dinner most Sundays

2- Parking in Manhattan is easier and free on Sundays

3- You get basically the same meal option for lunch and dinner but lunch is 25$ and dinner is 38$....you see where I’m going with this?

VH1 and TLC...I Heart This

OMG, what's up Young Loves?  So the new TLC movie trailer gives me life!  I must say kudos to the casting agents and directors.  Keke Palmer as Rozonda “Chilli” Thomas and Drew Sidora as Tionne “T-boz” Watkins are great choices.

The standing ovation however, to whomever the hell cast Naitia Jessica Kirkland aka “Lil Mama” as the late great Lisa “Left-Eye” Lopes.

Both are petite little ladies known to have a bit of a big mouth.  Both female rappers and dancers so I think there is a comparison to be made.  Lil' mama did get some flak for being cast as Left Eye.  In my opinion after watching the trailer, Ms. Kirkland honestly gave me goose bumps.

I’m an 80’s born and 90’s bred type of chic and TLC was definitely on of my favorite girl groups.  Some people didn't agree that the “lip-gloss” rapper could play the part and that she wasn't a good “fit”.  I say we shall see.  The movie CrazySexyCool: The TLC story will air on VH1 in October 2013

Who would you have cast for the movie?  Who plays Usher?  Lemme stop...but ya never know...it is VH1

Uhmm? What is going on with my scalp?

Just writing this is making me itch…here we go

What's up Young Loves, so last week the weather was torture.  I mean almost a disgusting 90 and above degrees every day in NYC.  I’m chocolate, so you know I melt.  Anyway, two Sundays ago I was out for a lovely walk in park.

Riverbank Park in Harlem, NYC Dress: XXI

WTH was I thinking right?  Not sure.  I started to feel my neck starting to itch furiously.  Once I got home I took my pony tail out and ran to the bathroom, sat on the toilet and scratched the hell out of my scalp.  I’m talking bout’ I used a comb, brush, pen, screw driver anything I could find.   OMG I swore I had lice, or got bit my something.  So, when I looked at my neck in the mirror

Be prepared for very descriptive details, but I need you to understand my suffering.

There were these huge, flaky, crusty, red blotches that were also bleeding on the back of my neck.  Have you ever seen a guy who recently cut his hair and then gets those bumps on the back of his neck (gag) it’s called “barbershop” infections but it’s medically term is folliculitis.  So wouldn’t you know that the Wednesday prior, I was preparing for my birthday (insert link) and my salon was closed once I got there because the AC was broken.  I was so desperate and went to a different hair salon nearby.  I should have known to avoid a salon where it’s completely empty!

So here I was, staring at my scalp, cussing and screaming thinking I caught something from this salon.  The following Monday, I called my doctor’s office to see if I could come in because I could no longer sit at my desk scratching my scalp like some kind of mental patient with a flesh eating skin virus.  (I’m telling you I had all types of thoughts going through my mind)

The doctor basically diagnosed it as Seborrheic Dermatitis or folliculitis.  (Google and I been figured that out, but whatever I gave them my $15 co-pay anyway)

FYI: “Seborrheic Dermatitis is a skin disorder affecting the scalp, face, and torso.  Typically, Seborrheic Dermatitis presents with scaly, flaky, itchy, and red skin.  Symptoms appear gradually and usually the first signs are flaky skin and scalp.”  (Source: Wikipedia)  In some cases inflammation and break outs can be brought on by the heat.  I’ve always had itchy scalp which I just attributed to just dandruff or dry scalp.  My current hair regimen includes Neutrogena T/gel and Sulfur 8 conditioner for that.

Oh and remember my hair loss incident.  Well I also learned that some people can experience mild redness, scaly skin lesions and in some cases hair loss.  #thestruggle

Anyway since I don’t always fully listen to doctors (because they don’t know me like that and who are they anyway?) I began using a variety of things including my RX to treat my scalp.

1- I wash my hair with a sulfate free shampoo as well as RX anti-fungal shampoo.
2- I allow my hair to air dry completely!  This is really important because if the hair is still wet it can become breeding ground for God knows what.
3- Once it was dries I condition my scalp with the Sulfur 8 hair conditioner and I conditioned the rest of my hair with ORS hair conditioner as well (according to the side effects of the shampoo it can actually change your hair texture so I wanted to make sure than my hair was still soft and manageable.
4- I treat the infected area with witch hazel and then apply a light coat of hydrocortisone ointment

So far so good, I’ll be back to update on my condition…oh and it’s not contagious

Birthday on a Budget

Yep, that’s the title and I’m sticking to it...

Hi Young Luvies, so this weekend was my birthday weekend ( Please check previous post if you’re interested in my birthday OOTD. )

Friday night headed to XVI lounge on 48th street in midtown Manhattan.  They had a rooftop after work party.

Cost: It was supposed to be free entry before 8 pm with drink specials for $5-$8 for beer, wine or mixed drinks.  If you’re not from NYC these prices probably seem a little outrageous, but in NYC this is pretty good.  Anyway I'm not even going to GO there with this place, however I did write a reviews on Yelp.com You can check it out here ---------> XVI review

Anyway enough about them (insert eye roll here)

Saturday afternoon I headed to Crema Restaurant, a Mexican spot located in the lower west side.  We went there for their unlimited mimosa brunch.

Cost:  $19.99 per person for one hour including unlimited mimosas, coffee, teas and one entrée.

I had a great time, the food was really good and it's a small cute place to sit and eat and have a drink or two.

After that we headed down the same street to do some Karaoke at Karaoke One Seven also located on W. 17th street.

Cost: Happy hour included half price drinks from 4-7 and it was $4 per person per hour for a private room.

Very, very fun time!!!  Almost lost my voice.  If you check in before 6 pm you can actually get happy hour prices until 8 pm.  We reserved a room and sang, and drank and well…just look at the pics.

Any other July birthdays out there? If so how did/will you celebrate?

Thanks for reading, see ya soon

Wish me a happy birthday @4everyoungMsD

For Ladies Who Brunch

Hi my Young Lovers, so this past Saturday was my 28th birthday.  I realized that the thought of partying past 12:00 am was frightening.  I mean when I started counting the hours of sleep I would get the next day, I just opted against it.  So instead of a night celebration, I said “Hey!” “It’s your birth-day” key word day.  So why not enjoy the beautiful summer, the day time and the sunshine?  Cus' I be tired n' stuff.  So I went for brunch…which was more like “linner” and a lil’ karaoke. (Want my review about the places I went then go ahead and check my other post)

I wanted flirty and feminine feel and to be comfortable of course.  But then I realized, I don’t think I've ever been to brunch.  What does one wear to brunch??  I Yahooed and Binged a few ideas (I was just so over Google that day).  These were some ideas I got.

Tips:

-No Jeans preferably
-Simple hair
-Do not over do the jewelry
-A floral print or an elegant patterned dress.

So after going on a damn mission to fit all of the above, this is what I came up with.  I think I did Ok. (Oh and my dress was a little small but I managed to breathe all night being as I’m still alive and all)
