Christmas 2014

Hey Young Loves, can you believe Christmas just came and left?  I haven’t gone Christmas caroling, haven't baked Christmas cookies, I haven’t gone ice skating or even seen the tree at Rockefeller center.  Who am I even?

Anyway good thing Christmas is all month in my head.  Therefore, I still have a few days to do these things.  Anyway I wanted to share a few random flicks I took over my break.  Hopefully there is more to come.  Happy Holidays!

Why the Ferguson Grand Jury Verdict Actually Made Me Feel Better

Ok so recently I actually started getting this idea in my head that formal higher education isn’t that important or relevant anymore.  I mean can work you but off to get an awesome gpa and still graduate and be broke for another 10 years.  Meanwhile you’re on social media and you see all these half naked girls, insta- celebs making money by promoting brands or comedian putting on wigs for jokes.

I’ll admit I actually started to feel a little jealous.  I would see some of these 18 years old social media starts buying houses, going on trips and wishing like “damn, I wish I had her face, or her body, his personality or her fashion sense so I can do that and makes lots of money just being alive.”  (Of course I’ve come to realize that’s there’s a lot more work behind it but that’s a different story for a different time.)

I came here to say that the Ferguson grand jury verdict actually made me feel better.  Crazy? Why?  Because I came back to the realization that education is freaking important.  Most of all for “us.”  I saw this post on Facebook and I re-posted it as well.

We need more of us in these positions. We need to be the doctors, the lawyers, legislators, policy makers, politicians, (cough) police officers.  And no no no, not just that one token black person ether.  I know this isn’t a new concept, but this is a reaffirmed concept.  We need to fill board rooms, hospitals, universities and court rooms…behind the bench!

So I must say in retrospect, I feel a lot better about being a grad student.  I feel a lot better about becoming a parent.  When I have a child I want to instill in them to follow their dreams and I will work to better whatever talent they have.  However I’m still going to be that parent that pushes education and making a difference.  With that being, said I need to follow my own advice.  I need to figure out how I’m going to make some kind of difference.

With that being said I do want to share that there were a total of 300 applicants for my program, 36 were accepted and 4 of us are black…so I guess I’m somewhat on the right track right?  So let me get back to these books.
P.S. Sorry if you came to here to read another rant about the verdict and how unfair it was.  I don’t really feel the need to mentions the obvious.

Street Harassment?

Hey Young Loves.  So if you are following the latest viral news, there has been a lot of buzz about a recent “street harassment video.”  The actress in the video was taped walking the streets of NYC for 10 hours, all in the sake of research.  (She’s a trooper I swear because uhm, nope)  The group “Hollaback!” posted the video in hopes of depicting street harassment against women in NYC.  Of course the video garnered split opinions.  Surprisingly, the views seemed to be split amongst men and women on both sides.  Some men where disgusted by the harassment she received, while some women didn’t perceive it as a big deal.

In my opinion the video made its point.  I see where she was coming from and what the group was trying to prove.  But of course I feel it was a bit lacking. Because these NYC streets for real, for real are full of WOLVES.  I even made a post about it this past summer.  Ok so at one point a guy does follow her down the street for 5 minutes.  That was pretty damn creepy.  However, I want to add that this is not all to what street harassment is for those who didn’t see what the big deal was.

Some guys can be so freaking disgusting.  Some of things that come out of their mouth is extremely sexual and extremely insulting.  Oh and let you not want to talk to them oh my God you become every type of “b!tch” “ho” or my favorite “you not all that cute anyway, you ugly anyway wicho black a$$.”  Yeah.

Also, I saw some people commenting that she wasn’t even that attractive.  Honestly I think she look fine, but that’s not the point.  The point is you don’t have to be “attractive” to get harassed on the street.  You just have to be a female and have two legs and two arms…if even that.  You can be any shape, any size, any color, and any creed.  I’ve seen women get street harassed while walking their daughter to the bus stop.  Like come on really??

Anyway this is as much as I have time to write for now.  Check out the video and tell me what you think in the comment section.

What Do You Mean You Don't See Color?

Ok so here I am trying to take this blog hiatus, and then everybody and their mother is tweeting, insta-gramming, face-booking, tumbling or whatever social networking about Ms. Oh So Raven’s interview with Oprah.

I did not watch the interview.   So let me just say that.   I did however see the full video clips.  First I total commend Raven for I guess “officially” coming out of the closet.  Even though I do understand that your sexual preference technically isn’t anyone’s business.

What is our business though, is your race.  *cough*  I understand not wanting to be labeled African-American.  The term itself is more politically correct.   I’ve never heard a Canadian call himself African-Canadian or a European say she is African-European.   I myself am Caribbean as well as African and I live in America.  No way am I going around calling my self Caribbean-African-American or even Caribbean American.  What would that even mean?   It doesn’t sit right with me, I don’t get it I just say I’m black end of story.

Raven however seems to have this notion that she is “color-less” which she is not.  No man you don’t have “darker skin” and “an interesting grade of hair.”  You missy are black.  Yes you may be lighter skinned but you are black.  Your roots do not stop in Louisiana, your full lips and wide nose clearly prove that.

You were chosen to be on a black sitcom for crying out loud.  How can you have been on the Cosby’s and not see color?  How can you see Keke Palmer be the first black Cinderella on Broadway and not see color.  How can you see Halle Berry to be first black actress to win an OSCAR for best actress and not see color?

What do you mean you don’t see color?  You must be legally blind, and cannot see.  I can fully understand a person saying “color doesn’t bother me” or “I won’t treat anyone different because of the color of their skin.”  We live in an America that is still very much racially charged.  Have you not been watching the news?  To say your color-less in AMERICA even on 2014…Nah…I don’t get it.

You may not see yourself as color-less, but trust me, the world does not.  That one role you audition for that asked for a blond female with blue eyes…yeah I’m sure the reason you didn’t get wasn’t due to your lack of talent.

As always thank you for reading.

A Mother’s Love Tour Cancelled!

Hey Young Loves, I’m kinda sad.  I really was going to try squeeze this into my schedule and see this if the came to NYC.  According to the blogger turned actor, the play was cancelled after one week due to lack of financial resources.   In other words, they just didn’t sell.  I feel really bad because it not only affects the fans who wanted to go, but it affects the play participants.  The actors, crew, makeup artists, wardrobe stylists or whoever were invested in it.  It’s like bye-bye, there goes your time and money you will never see again.

Check out Funky Dineva’s blog post here, where he states why the tour was cancelled.  Oh well I guess I’ll just have to check out Kandi on RHOA and Funky Dineva on YouTube.

Wait What? Getting Wait-listed for Graduate School

Hey Young Loves, this blog post is actually in addition to my YouTube video I posted.  You know how I do.

As I mentioned in the video I will starting mygraduate program very soon.  What I didn’t mention was that I was actually waitlisted for the program.  I forgot to mention it, but honestly I felt like it would have made the video too long.  So here is my advice in regards to being waitlisted from personal experience.

First off, I know being waitlisted sucks!  Especially if you only applied to one school.  (BTW don’t just apply to one school)  It feels kind of like “academic limbo.”  You start thinking “should I apply again” or “should I apply somewhere else” or “should I stay on the waitlist and see if I get in?”  In regards to these feelings, I did a lot of research to see what other people said and it’s pretty freaking normal.  I had all of those feelings but thank God I was able to get in because I really didn’t want to wait another year to start…aint nobody got time for that.

If you get waitlisted for a program I suggest that you contact the admission counselor for a face to face meeting if possible.  Go over with them what you may be missing and ask for advice on how to improve your application.  In addition to that, if you are taking any pre-requisite courses, continue to take them and get the best grades you can.  Hopefully all A’s but no less than a B-.  (I heard a C is the kiss of death to some admission counselors).

In my case I also picked up some volunteer hours in a nursing home where I worked directly with an occupational therapist as well as other rehab professionals.   So I would say if you aren’t already working in the field that your major will be in, find a way to intern or volunteer in that field.  I can’t suggest a specific amount of hours however I did 40 hours.

Of course I am no expert I am just sharing things that worked for me.  I know when I was looking for advice what I found was really helpful.  Therefore, I wanted to pay it forward.   Good luck to everyone.

As always thank you for reading.

DatingDionne101 #8 Was I wrong? #BEDA

I like to write about shopping and beauty related things, but I also like to be a little personal as well.  This is an extremely random blog post but hey it’s my blog I can do what I want to.

So one of my favorite blogger Demetria Lucas has an ask.fm page where people ask the most random relation questions.  So I decided to ask one as well.   The version I asked is pretty short since you only are allowed 300 characters.  So here is the full story:

Once I dated this guy and it was going ok.  One day he randomly gave me a gift.  It wasn’t my birthday or anything.  Now under normal circumstances a girl would be excited.  However I felt kind of uncomfortable because he gave me a gift before and if you read this blog post you’ll have an idea as to why I felt that way.

Any way I mentioned once to him while we were in Macy’s that I don’t know if I would ever shell out over a $1,000 for a bag.  Especially since I’m so frugal.  Long story short, he bought me a Louis Vuitton bag!  Wait what?  However, it was Not a Louis Vuitton bag.  Sigh.

I kid you not, it was the worse replica, imitation or whatever you want to call it.  Plus it had a horrible plastic leather smell.  I put on the fakest smile ever and just looked at him.  To add insult to injury, he had the nerve to wrap it in a Macy’s bag to try to play it off like it was the real thing.  Oh and not a Macy’s shopping bag but a plastic Macy’s bag.  Double sigh.

You guys may not know this but I used to work at Macys (plus I also have sense).  Therefore, I know it was a fake.  However, it being fake wasn’t even the issue.  It was the story that came with it.  He told me how he “used his last paycheck to buy this,” and how the cashier told him how “this must be for a lucky lady.”

I remember being so irritated but at the same time really worried for him because clearly he was a pathological liar.  Plus he also thinks I’m an idiot because this was the second time he tried to give me a gift and lied about it.

In the end I told him I “didn’t feel comfortable with him spending so much money on me.”  I never told him I knew it was fake the same way I never told him I knew that picture he gave me was fake.

Now I writing this because I was having a conversation with someone and I told them this story and they told me I was wrong and that I should be grateful I even got a gift.  So my question to you guy is, was I wrong?

As always thank you for reading.

Itty Bitty Beauty Haul #BEDA

*****sneaks into your blogosphere****

Hi remember me, yeah the one who wasn’t doing BEDA anymore.  Yeah her.  Well she changed her mind.  I swear I can’t even quit my quitting.  I just felt so darn close to this goal I could almost taste it.  So let’s just chalk it up to me being in my feelings.  However the rest of my BEDA post will be very short and sweet.

So on Wednesday I went to TJ Maxx and was browsing through the beauty section.  If you remember my Love, Like or Loath post, I am not totally happy with the eye cream I currently have.

I saw this one and just decided to give it a try.  No real reason why.  I didn’t even read any reviews I’m just going in completely blindly.  However I did like that it promises “conceal dark circles.”

With graduate school approaching, I know I am going to have a few sleepless nights.

While I was there, I also picked up this Vitamin C skin cream.  I tried to find some reviews and I really couldn’t.  So I guess I will be my own guinea pig.  It was the only one left so I’m guessing that’s a good thing.

It states that it’s hypoallergenic.  I have very sensitive skin so I always look for this in a beaut product.  It also promises to “improve skin elasticity and even skin tone.”

I follow two beauty bloggers thefancyfaced and PatriciaBright and I know they recommend vitamin C to brighten your skin.  I’m hoping this is a good product for all of the above.
As always thank you for reading.
Forever yours, Dionne

10,000? #BEDA

Hey guys, uhm remember that time I said I wasn’t going to do BEDA anymore?  Well uhm see what had happened was…  Ok I really am not this time I swear.  I just wanted to share that I made 10,000 blog views on 8/27/14.

I promise they aren’t all my own.  No the really aren’t I created a JavaScript to not track my own views.  (Look at me with my tech talk)  Even though it doesn’t always work depending on what computer I am on and sometimes I clear my cookies.

Well anyway let me stop rambling.  I want to thank whoever came by, those who stayed and those who commented etc.  It’s been so fun and even though grad school is starting soon, I promised myself I won’t be all work and no play.  I will work on my blog goals in my little bit of spare time…hopefully.  Still no new camera yet.  I’m still up in the air about the cannon t31 since I really feel like I have no idea what to do with a dslr.

There I go rambling again… ok thank you again.

As always thank you for reading.
Forever yours, Dionne

A Mini Post: Motivation from Kandee Johnson #BEDA

Ok I guess I am back sooner than I thought.  No I really am not doing BEDA anymore.  However I had to share this.  If you saw my New Blogger Tag on my YouTube channel, you will know that Kandee Johsnon is one of my favorite bloggers.

I love a beauty blogger who does more than just beauty. Yes a look book and make up tutorial is great, but sometimes you need a good old fashioned chat.  Pleas check out her latest video.  It was so freaking motivational to me and I think it can be to you too.  She has like a gazillion subscribers so maybe you have already seen it.  But in case you haven’t:

Why I’m No Longer Going To #BEDA

Hey Young Loves, ok I know you’re thinking.  “Why would she stop now when she’s so close to the 31st?”  Well I originally took on this challenge in order to see if I can do it.  I have confirmed I can if I wanted to.  However, blogging constantly requires me to be on social media a lot.  I have to post, them promote, then interact, read comments etc.  (If you’re a blogger you already know the deal.)

I really feel I need a social media break at this point.  I literally have been getting these minor headaches and I think I am just taking in way too much.  Social media can actually have an adverse effect on your progress.  It can sometimes make you begin to compare yourself to others and I just can’t do that to myself.

Furthermore, I will be starting my graduate program as of September 5th (I will blog about this later on) and I just really want to relax, put myself in a better mood, and mentally and physically prepare myself for all the hard work coming my way.  So in other words I want to do absolutely nothing!!

I will be back of course but just not on such a strict scheduled.  I don’t want to make it seem like I’m making excuses, but hey whatever.

So I will see you very soon, but just not for the rest of this month lol.  Thank so far for doing BEDA with me.
As always thank you for reading.

Highlights of the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards #BEDA

Hey Young Loves, ok so here are my highlights of the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards:

1-Somebody won some award
2-Some group performed
3-Beyonce

Okay okay I’m done shading.  The awards weren’t that bad.  I know people would disagree, but I expected way worse.  This is the first time in a long time I actually sat and watched an entire award show beginning to end.  I sure wasn’t here for the BET awards.

I was kind of impressed with some performances.  That Ariana Grande girl really can sing.  I liked Jessie J. too.  I thought Nicki Minaj did her thing despite her wardrobe malfunction.  Adam Levine is officially Bae.  I’m not exactly sure where Maroon 5 was performing but I liked the performance none the less.

Speaking of Bae.  Can someone find me a corny darkskin R&B dude like Jason Derulo please?  He just looks like he sings Jordin Sparks to sleep.

As far as outfits, I’m no fashionista so I will just tell you who looked pretty.  I thought JLO look pretty.  I thought Kelly looked nice too.  Kim Kardashian’s boobs looked great…K I’m done.

Photos source: eonline.com

Photos source: eonline.com

So if I had to rate the show as an adult I would give it a 6/10.  If I were a teenager again I’d probably give it a 9/10.  I really had no idea who Fifth Harmony was?  I had to look twice to make sure it wasn’t Dainty Kane.

I did notice a few Viners and YouTubers made it to the red carpet.  Even though I don’t actually know much about her, I did notice Ingrid Nilson or Missglamorazzi co-hosted the “insta-glam” section.  That’s pretty awesome.

Now I would talk about BeyoncĂ©’s performance and acceptance speech, but honestly that lady kills and slays me so much I just run out of energy when I try to even discuss her.  See now I’m tired again.
