Wait What? Getting Wait-listed for Graduate School

Hey Young Loves, this blog post is actually in addition to my YouTube video I posted.  You know how I do.

As I mentioned in the video I will starting mygraduate program very soon.  What I didn’t mention was that I was actually waitlisted for the program.  I forgot to mention it, but honestly I felt like it would have made the video too long.  So here is my advice in regards to being waitlisted from personal experience.

First off, I know being waitlisted sucks!  Especially if you only applied to one school.  (BTW don’t just apply to one school)  It feels kind of like “academic limbo.”  You start thinking “should I apply again” or “should I apply somewhere else” or “should I stay on the waitlist and see if I get in?”  In regards to these feelings, I did a lot of research to see what other people said and it’s pretty freaking normal.  I had all of those feelings but thank God I was able to get in because I really didn’t want to wait another year to start…aint nobody got time for that.

If you get waitlisted for a program I suggest that you contact the admission counselor for a face to face meeting if possible.  Go over with them what you may be missing and ask for advice on how to improve your application.  In addition to that, if you are taking any pre-requisite courses, continue to take them and get the best grades you can.  Hopefully all A’s but no less than a B-.  (I heard a C is the kiss of death to some admission counselors).

In my case I also picked up some volunteer hours in a nursing home where I worked directly with an occupational therapist as well as other rehab professionals.   So I would say if you aren’t already working in the field that your major will be in, find a way to intern or volunteer in that field.  I can’t suggest a specific amount of hours however I did 40 hours.

Of course I am no expert I am just sharing things that worked for me.  I know when I was looking for advice what I found was really helpful.  Therefore, I wanted to pay it forward.   Good luck to everyone.

As always thank you for reading.
